A molecular model of the bacterial cytoplasm by Adrian Elcock

Biology

The cytoplasm of the gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli is very densely packed with macromolecules, and this highly crowded environment is expected to have a significant impact on the diffusive and thermodynamic properties of its constituents. Continuing progress in the field of structural biology now allows molecular simulations of the cytoplasm to be performed with structurally detailed models, providing a new, computational view of macromolecular behavior in vivo (see McGuffee, S. R. and A. H. Elcock (2010, March). Diffusion, crowding & protein stability in a dynamic molecular model of the bacterial cytoplasm. PLoS Computational Biology 6 (3), e1000694+.). dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pcbi.1000694 www.ploscompbiol.org

Alter Nature: We Can - David Benqué - Acoustic Botany (2010)

Biology

Image by Z33 art centre, Hasselt

Acoustic Botany presents a garden for listening. Benqué suggests a combination of plant manipulations: from grafting and selective breeding methods to genetic manipulation and synthetic biology, to make flowers and plants produce sounds. What if you could listen to a garden, instead of looking at it? What would be possible soundscapes? What would the experience be like? But also, how would greenhouses be adapted? What set of rules would one need to take into account?
By presenting a fantastical acoustic garden, a controlled ecosystem of entertainment, Benqué aims to explore our cultural and aesthetic relationship to nature, and to question its future in the age of Synthetic Biology.
