George Curry 1861-1947: An Autobiography

During his remarkable career, George Curry participated in and observed many spectacular episodes of New Mexico's turbulent history: the Lincoln County War, Colfax County War, Springer War, Lee-Fountain case, and first New Mexico State Constitutional Convention. He served as a sheriff, territorial governor, United States congressman, international boundary commissioner, and New Mexico's first state historian. As a young man, Curry met Billy the Kid and was on personal terms with numerous public figures like Pat Garrett, Oliver Lee, Thomas B. Catron, Albert Fall, Elfego Baca, Harvey B. Fergusson, and many others. Curry's stint as a Rough Rider during the Spanish-American War introduced him to Theodore Roosevelt, who admired his service as a soldier, chief of police, and governor during the Philippine Insurrection.
