How do you make split field stones?

Question by camile4gd: How do you make split field stones?

we want to make a retaining wall of split field stone, and we have a lot of field stone already, but not the know how on splitting them. We have a 12 ton press, and drills etc.. any info, would be helpful.

The way Ive allways done it is look for any signs of grain to the stone stand it so the end grain is up and smack it with a sledge hammer, or just hit it if it dont break turn it and hit it again. If you live in a cold climate like I do in the winter I just wet them down good with water and let freeze, and it takes very little effort to split
