Question by jasperismybaby: What happens if you include real events in fiction?

Say I write a story and I want to give it a shot and see if I can get it published (slim chance, I know) anyway, and I include real life events and a notorious murderer in it. I change the story some but keep the names. Is this a bad idea? Or should I completely change the names and events? Thanks!

Change the names...but not the events...and say it is "based off of a true story" yeah this could work.
